Interesting Observation

So, I was playing the Kart-Race for the Story Mode on Sonic Adventure 2 Battle as Rouge, and then when I finished the stage, I saw an orange Tails, and then in other games, he's sort of yellow orange i.e.- Sonic Riders, Sonic X, etc...and when I mean orange, I mean like standard orange. o_o

(As well in the opening of Sonic Adventure)

Has anyone noticed this?

If you mean Tails' fur color change as the Sonic franchise broadened with more games, then yes, I've noticed it. In the earlier Sonic games (like Sonic 2 and 3) he's orange, but for some reason he was changed to bright yellow in Sonic Heroes.

All of his concept and promotional images from all those years ago were indeed a very vibrant orange, and yes, they have moved him to a more yellowy tone. But I also recall that if you've ever watched a single episode of AoStH or SatAM, his tone is so dark you could almost call it more brown or a really muddy orange shade.

I think the best way of explaining this is because, I figure they needed him to conform to more primary themes, ergo, Sonic's theme is blue and Knuckles is red, so it kinda makes sense that they've made Tails more yellow. You'll also notice that yellow is the theme colour for when you're in fly formation in Heroes. Maybe this has something to do with it, but I truthfully don't know why they've done this.

Got me thinking when you mentioned it though.

He's generally yellow-orange, but this isn't the first time he's had random color changes...

Like R1CK1 said, he was more of a brown in SatAM and he soon was just muddy orange in AoStH. I think it was part of thing with testing the right color for Tails, i prefer any yellow to orange, rather than brown.

Then again, I believe Tails was supposed to be brown, then somehow he got changed to a deep orange than yellow orange. Like you said.

Now that you bring this up, the colours of Sonic, Knuckles and Tails reminds me of the colour wheel, or to be more specific the three Primary Colours; Blue/Red/Yellow.

I think the biggest reasons for each characters colour themehas to do with there personality yeah. Blue is a cool colour, so Sonic is blue to coincide with his "cool" personality so to speak yeah, and I'd imagine the other characters follow suit, with Knuckles being red since he seems to get angry all the time (but this is questionable yeah?), and Tails being yellow since he seems to more cheerful out of the bunch yeah. The same could be said about the other characters, but Imma to lazy to make up some theory about the other characters.

However I think the reason for Tails slight/dramatic colour tone shift is to do with the tone of the story, and whats needed for the story. Such as the way he appeared SaTAM, seeing as it's story was darker toned yeah (I'm not even going to mention AoSTH since I don't like it). But this could just be me being a dumbass again so I'll let you decide amongst yourselves yeah.

Changing colors to fit darker tones? What about Shadow the Hedgehog? Last time I checked, Tails was bright yellow in that game.
